The Person Behind The Purse

Hi, my name is Mary Catherine Kunze. Yes, I am the MC in Uniquely MC! I am the owner of Uniquely MC. My story is ordinary enough. I was born and raised in Columbia, SC. Unlike some people, I never had a grand vision for my life. I’m more of an inspired dreamer than the goal driven type. I’ve always loved to be creative; however, I did not fully tap into my creative potential until I went to college. Fresh out of high school, I headed to Winthrop University where I decided to major in interior design (2006-2010). It seemed to me to be the most practical artsy career in the bunch, so I headed off to school ready to tackle the world of t-squares and colored pencils (among other things).
College, despite being challenging and stressful, was exciting and surprisingly opened my eyes to my creative instincts. I’ve come to discover that being creative is an innate part of who I am and who God created me to be. I graduated, in essence, with an unwritten book in my hands. I had no plans and the future seemed so blank and surreal. No more defined place markers in which to mark my life.
So, in 2010, after graduation, when the employers from my two part-time jobs called me to see if I would be willing to continue working for them, I said yes! One day while at work, a customer came in and said that she made handbags. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head. The next day I went to the store, bought a pattern and made my first bag. In 2011, I acquired my retail and business license. I worked retail part-time for 6 years, slowly building up experience and courage with Uniquely MC. & In 2017, I went full time!
*** Side note: Never would I have thought I would try to start a small business of my own let alone try to make it into something full-time. At the beginning EVERYTHING felt so impossible. I had so many emotional, mental and spiritual battles to overcome with even taking the first step. I still have my moments. Let’s talk sometime. ***
When I went full- time so did my mom, Sherrie! She is my biggest asset and I couldn’t ask for a better partner in all this. We have become a dynamic mother/ daughter team. I love working with her and I’m so thankful to have her by my side. There have been many valleys along the way but those moments have been equally met with God’s faithfulness.
Despite not always knowing the next step, I know I'm learning and continuing to just "go". I hope my story encourages you.
Thanks for reading and supporting our small business,

“Trust in the Lord, and do good; dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.”
Psalm 37:3-6
